Environment Research

To find the environmental themes for my game, I looked at it as the ends of a political ideology spectrum and then the normal realm. We start in a regular 1989 Berlin, then travel between a Far-Right Nazi-ruled world set, also in 1989, and then also an ultraconservative Utopia that is so clean and "idealistic" the government will do anything to clean up any problems.

From here I will be exploring the possibilities of each environment by using mood boards, collected images for buildings, roads, paths and plant life.

"Regular" 1980s Berlin

This one was easy to research as it just needed to be historically accurate. So to begin with I looked into the areas surrounding the wall on both sides, smuggling routes and street life. Lots of Berlin was also still in rubble from the war, with the social and economic differences of East and West being still heavily present but also being a battleground for rioters trying to bring the wall down.

"Utopia" 1980s Berlin

The Utopia Environment is a slice of suburbia, surround by nature parks and "purity". Therefore a lot of shrubbery and foliage needed to be researched, along with clean and Utopia city scapes.

"Nazi-Ruled" 1980s Berlin

Much like the prior environment, there is a "clean" aspect to this environment. The Nazi ideologies of keeping everything kempt, clean and pure transfers to their cities. No dirt or crime, quiet and nobody says a word about it without being punished.
